I was working as the Stunt Coordinator on a Warner Brothers film Titled "Eraser" and she told me about several things to look out for. One was to make sure the harnesses and cable were checked for all the Stuntmen involved in a sequence, which entailed a fight between Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Caan as well as their Stunt Doubles that took place on top of a 40-foot cargo container hanging from a gantry crane moving through the air at 60 feet high. During the scripted fight the container falls and the Stunt Doubles fall with it from six stories high but are harnessed and cabled to what is called a descender unit that stops their falls short of the container crashing onto the ground. This gag had been thoroughly tested 4 times by my crew as well as the special f/x crew that was in charge of the exploding cable cutters the drop the container on cue.
On the day of the actual shoot during the recorded Safety meeting that takes place with the entire crew before each big stunt sequence to go over any and all information that pertains to the Stunt as well as any questions any crew members may have. I’ll get to the point now, after giving a detailed description of all the points of what to expect I said the only thing I see that could be a potential problem is that if one of the four Cable cutters failed from the F/X Dept then the container would not fall square and get hung up and oscillate the while system. And that is exactly what happened. One of the cutters failed and as the 40’ container fell with the Stunt doubles as well. The container flipped 90 degrees to the ground as the descender cable pulled the Stuntmen to safety the container oscillated the whole system which caused the point where the safety cables on the Stunt Doubles were held 80 feet above them as there pick points started the Stunt Doubles swinging in 60-70 foot arch’s 20 feet above the deck. Everyone was A-OK a little shaken but thank God we did our job right as well as tested and double-checked the rigging. That’s our job but you never know when a snag will present itself so you prep for all. Anyhow this was foreseen by the Angels and given to me months before. Later that night when all was said and done it hit me that this info was exactly what the Angles told me. I was struck in awe for some time after that.

One final note of interest: Whenever I felt despair about the situation I would always think of the angels counseling me to have patience and faith, sometimes easier said than done. One day I was sitting in my office feeling particularly despairing, when I noticed an illustrated card on the windowsill which I’d never seen before. When I picked it up I saw it was a quote from St. Francis de Sales, which read: “Make yourself familiar with the angels, and behold them frequently in spirit; for without being seen, they are present with you.” I couldn’t believe it! I immediately asked around the office to see who had put it there. No one had. To this day I have no idea where it came from, but it was like a gentle touch on the shoulder from the angels to remind me that they were there looking out for me and to have faith, that all would be well. And, happily, it was.
I am forever grateful to Julie and the angels for their wise counsel. It is such a blessing and a comfort to know there is guidance when we need it most.
